Our 2027 program
Training plus real-world experience
The inaugural award provides funding directly to an emerging ocean leader — $5,000 toward a recognised training qualification and $5,000 toward a placement or field experience of their choosing.
Scuba training award
A practical pathway into marine work
The award is designed for a recipient pursuing scientific, professional or research diving. Rather than arranging training and placements on their behalf, we award the funding directly — giving recipients more flexibility and keeping things simple, at least for the beginning.
$10,000
AUD total funding envelope for one recipient in 2027.
What is funded
One award, two parts — your plan
Recognised training
$5,000 AUD awarded directly toward a recognised scuba training qualification of the recipient’s choosing.
Placement or field experience
$5,000 AUD awarded directly toward a placement or field experience of the recipient’s choosing — provided they have a suitable plan at the time of selection.
Why fund both?
A qualification should open a door
Training builds capability. Experience helps turn that capability into confidence, connections and a meaningful career pathway. We fund both parts directly so the recipient can pursue the training and field experience that fit their goals — without us arranging placements on their behalf.
- A recognised scuba qualification aligned with the recipient’s goals
- Hands-on experience in a relevant marine setting
- Connection to a community of ocean professionals
- A written reflection that shares learning and helps pay the opportunity forward
Looking ahead
Starting focused, building over time
The Upwelling Project begins with a recurring training and experience award. Our longer-term ambition is to extend support into research, community and development programs across Oceania.
