Our 2027 program
Training plus real-world experience
The inaugural award supports an emerging ocean leader to gain recognised scuba training and put it into practice through a work experience placement.
Scuba training award
A practical pathway into marine work
The award is designed for a recipient pursuing scientific, professional or research diving. It combines funding for training with support for a placement after the diver training is complete.
$10,000
AUD total funding envelope for one recipient in 2027.
What is funded
One award, two connected steps
Recognised training
Up to $5,000 AUD to pursue training with a recognised scuba training institution.
Work experience
Up to $5,000 AUD to facilitate a work experience opportunity or placement after the diver training.
Why combine them?
A qualification should open a door
Training builds capability. Experience helps turn that capability into confidence, connections and a meaningful career pathway. The Upwelling Project funds both so the recipient can take a practical next step.
- A recognised scuba qualification aligned with the recipient’s goals
- Hands-on experience in a relevant marine setting
- Connection to a community of ocean professionals
- A written reflection that shares learning and helps pay the opportunity forward
A whale shark — one of the many reasons recipients train for a career in the ocean
Looking ahead
Starting focused, building over time
The Upwelling Project begins with a recurring training and experience award. Our longer-term ambition is to extend support into research, community and development programs across Oceania.
